The Punishment System

How It Works:

The number one rule of the captains is do not harm fellow crew members. The Moira doesn't have a strict environment, but that one rule is asked to be followed. What normally would result in hold time, the captains believe is no longer enough to keep crew from harming one another. This has brought about the creation of the punishment system.

The rules are simple. If you physically injure another crew member or murder them, you are required to comment to this page using the form below. You will be asked to pick three different punishments from the stages below, each vary in how extreme they are, and to put those punishments into the comment you make using the form. From the date that you post here until three days later, players will be allowed to respond to your comment with a vote. This vote is what their character believes is a worthy punishment for the crime committed. The captains will not vote unless there is a tie.

ICly: A MID message will be sent out detailing the events; it will have an attachment of the footage (only in the case of a murder, all other events will not show footage) with it. Crew members will be asked to seek out the captains in the mess hall and relay their vote as to the offenders punishment.

Currently, a new system is in the works. Find out more here.

RATCHET ABSTAINS SPIRITUALLY, but actually votes for Category 2 because the idea of Rinzler getting counselling on nonviolent solutions to their problems sounds like a really good one.

But he'll be clear that he otherwise thinks this system is trash.

Ratchet will abstain from voting and REITERATE; this system is utter garbage.

Breq will vote Category 2, agreeing with other that the additional two days will be more impactful than solitary. At this point she is growing fed up of people aboard this ship taking matters into their own hands when it's obviously leading to nothing but chaos and create an unsafe environment for their peers.

L watches quietly but with evident interest, then votes for Category 2 with a shake of his head. These potential sentences aren't long enough, he thinks, but at the same time, he wants to know what motivated this to begin with.

Out of fairness, Breq will vote Category 2, the same she did for Peter. While she finds their efforts in some ways justifiable, their decision to take matters into their own hands is not conductive to this community finding any semblance of peace.

Breq will vote for Category 3, citing it as the most effective to wrangle the problem....that problem being someone who doesn't know how to function freely in society.

L's jaw visibly sets as he watches all of this, and he then votes for Category 3 without hesitation or apparent emotion.

Deacon votes for Category 2, same as Peter, since she did help try to kill a guy. Kinda impressed that she volunteered for trial because he didn't think that was a thing that could or would happen. (And also fascinated by the whole process of voting for punishments because wasteland justice tends to involve simply shooting the offender in a dark alley.)

Yada yada yada Category 2 because stop arranging murders everyone. Please and thank you.

Miller would say he knows Rinzler is dangerous, and he is not happy with his response to provocation, but would argue that a lot of people that goad others into violence aren't exactly being safe to be around themselves. Especially when they're responsible for the tutelage of notably violent children.

Category 2 here, too.

Link shows up, but he doesn't vote. He just looks... really confused and a little hurt that this would happen. Alice helped him a lot with math and everything... She seems so nice. He doesn't know what to do, how to gauge what's going on, so he just... abstains.

After a great deal of thought, Deacon votes for Category 2. Rinzler's obviously got violence issues, and if he knew for certain that Rinzler was just inherently violent and malicious, he'd be privately thinking that none of these punishments were adequate. But the evidence doesn't give enough context for him to feel comfortable making that call.

His previous conversation with Rinzler, well before all this went down, has him uncertain because Rinzler reminds him of the enslaved synths of the Commonwealth and he doesn't know how much of this might be basically AI brainwashing. He doesn't know how to judge the culpability of someone who may not have free agency, and he doesn't yet know the full answer to the question of how much free agency Rinzler actually has. So even though he very much dislikes Rinzler's violence, for now he opts to err on the side of merciful. (Also, he wants to be able to corner Rinzler and try to get answers to those questions, and he can't do that if he's in solitary confinement.)

As he did with Peter, Nihlus is the first to bring up the point that she's been waiting for: That the trap could've been a hazard to more than just Rinzler. She has to respect that kind of logical, situational analysis. If justice on board continues this way, they'll need it.

She won't comment on it, but will watch him carefully as he votes.
niffin: teeth ready for sinking ([ green: aimless ])

Alice doesn't know much about Chara's lookalike, but good lord, someone give that kid a hug.

She'll just ask him to feed her cat.
niffin: put your weight against the door ([ red: standing around ])

[personal profile] niffin 2016-04-14 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Under other circumstances, she might as well have been the one saying it. Alice doesn't comment, but makes a mental note of Breq's name. It's something to inquire about later.

why does he have to suffer too? FINE

[personal profile] niffin 2016-04-14 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
For someone who's seemed so over the top in her network stalking perusal, Deacon's been alarmingly rational so far. Maybe it's just alarming that someone's wearing those shades indoors. Either way, she's silently kind of grateful. Alice doesn't think she'd have had the nerve to step forward without more than Alan's vote in the ring.
niffin: though far away ([ blouse: respond ])

[personal profile] niffin 2016-04-14 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
The ship would be a much simpler place if everyone was Doc Yewll.
niffin: i'm not done ([ navy: ennui ])

[personal profile] niffin 2016-04-14 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch, Miller.

He's the first to manage anything that actually cuts, that slices through the numb angry ache of having seen that footage. Alice doesn't respond, and doesn't look him in the eyes. There's nothing else to say.
niffin: hey friends don't you think ([ orange: ponder ])

[personal profile] niffin 2016-04-14 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
If he doesn't move away, Alice will try to place a hand on his arm for a moment as he passes. She doesn't say anything.

Shepard votes Category 2 reasonably swiftly, along a similar line of reasoning to Nihlus'. Endangerment of crew members, resulting in the death of one. Lack of communication between crew is dangerous, no matter the risk at hand.
