The Punishment System

How It Works:

The number one rule of the captains is do not harm fellow crew members. The Moira doesn't have a strict environment, but that one rule is asked to be followed. What normally would result in hold time, the captains believe is no longer enough to keep crew from harming one another. This has brought about the creation of the punishment system.

The rules are simple. If you physically injure another crew member or murder them, you are required to comment to this page using the form below. You will be asked to pick three different punishments from the stages below, each vary in how extreme they are, and to put those punishments into the comment you make using the form. From the date that you post here until three days later, players will be allowed to respond to your comment with a vote. This vote is what their character believes is a worthy punishment for the crime committed. The captains will not vote unless there is a tie.

ICly: A MID message will be sent out detailing the events; it will have an attachment of the footage (only in the case of a murder, all other events will not show footage) with it. Crew members will be asked to seek out the captains in the mess hall and relay their vote as to the offenders punishment.

Currently, a new system is in the works. Find out more here.

Player: Hattie

Characters Involved: Peter Maximoff [personal profile] takeitslow | Rinzler [personal profile] notglitching | J. M. Austen [personal profile] gentlemenpreferblondes

Details: This happens IC on the 14th.

Footage will show that Peter, with the help of Alice Quinn ([personal profile] niffin) laying a trap for Rinzler in the aft with obvious intent to cause serious injury or kill the program. Said trap will involve putting up an electric net to electrocute or short out Rinzler's system, which will be shown to fail, and raising the temperature of the room to overload/slow down Rinzler. Peter will be shown leading Rinzler into the aft and attempting to get him into the net. Failing that, the two will be shown getting into a physical altercation.

In the ensuing struggle Peter steals the programs weapons, exploits an injury to force Rinzler down, and will look to be attempting a kill before Rinzler is able to take Peter down instead. The fight will directly lead to J being killed by Rinzler when she attempts to help Peter.

If questioned for trial, Peter will refuse to discuss either the intent behind his actions or Alice's involvement in any official capacity, instead insisting to take full blame for the incident himself. Any remorse shown will be on behalf of J's death; he will not act as though he feels anything about his attempt to kill Rinzler.

Robin votes for category 2, because two extra days of not being able to run around or do anything for two extra days seems like it'll be worse for Peter than three days without being able to talk to talk to anyone for three days.

She doesn't question why he did it or anything, but she's clearly really unhappy with him about this whole incident.

Alan remains quiet and withdrawn for most of the trial, though he’s visibly disturbed by the footage shown of both Alice and Peter creating the trap, and of the ensuing fight between Peter and Rinzler. Despite his silence for most of the testimony, he will suddenly speak up during the sentencing, asking if it’s customary on the ship to punish premeditated murder attempts so lightly. He will also question why Alice isn’t being put on trial as well, as the footage shows her helping to create a trap with the clear intention of seriously harming or killing Rinzler.

Given the options he has, Alan will vote for Category 2: the duration of the punishment, however paltry, is more important to him than whether or not Peter has company.

Miller's going to be very torn. He liked J. She's always been relatively kind to him (As far as J can be). In a way, he feels guilty. Rinzler has been his responsibility, too.

He'll say that he can tell Rinzler was afraid and reacting to a threat. He's still a person. He'll mention acted to save someone while the scraplets were attacking so he's not just blindly lethal. He'll plan on drilling it into Rinzler that he can't make mistakes on who is a threat and who isn't again. J has been kind but this man actually saved him. He can't hate him.

He'll go for Category 2. For the extra days.

For the sake of peace aboard the ship, Doc Yewll's going to vote for Category 2. But the truth is she's still not happy with what Rinzler did to Tron. She'd have Rinzler locked away for longer if she could.

She won't be saying this out loud. Fake people like them have to be careful what they mention. It's too easy to discard one, and she knows it's very much born out of bias for her friend.

Tron watches the trial quietly, concerned about Rinzler and everyone involved. He is upset that Rinzler had to kill someone, but also realizes that he was trapped and that it was in self-defense.

Tron votes for Category 2 as punishment.

Deacon thinks that Peter should receive the Category 2 punishment, to be jailed for a longer length of time, because solitary confinement, when it's just three days of it, isn't much of an impact in his view, and setting a trap with the express purpose of murdering someone who wasn't previously trying to murder you first is a big no-no. And he thinks that Alice should be questioned, and if she says that she wasn't acting under duress, she should be brought to trial, too, as an accomplice. Peter being willing to take the blame, while showing loyalty to a friend, doesn't absolve Alice's culpability.

He doesn't fault Rinzler for attacking Peter with lethal force and almost killing him, because that's what you do when someone's trying to kill you. But he does frown upon Rinzler killing J, as J was just a civilian.

(References - Peter Trial. After the second suggestion that she be tried as well, she’ll volunteer.)

Footage will show Alice, with the help of Peter Maximoff ([personal profile] takeitslow) laying a trap for Rinzler in the aft with obvious intent to cause serious injury or kill the program. Said trap will involve putting up an electric net to electrocute or short out Rinzler's system, which will be shown to fail, and raising the temperature of the room to overload/slow down Rinzler. Alice refuses to discuss Peter’s actions or his involvement, and tries to take blame for the incident herself. She seems remorseful for what happened to Peter and J, but will express no emotion for Rinzler.

If questioned, she claims that there’s been evidence for a while that Rinzler is dangerous, and that the Captains showed no signs handling the problem effectively. In her view, it’s not about what Rinzler is, but what he’s done: The crew is full of scary people, but most of them have enough self-control that goading them into violence wouldn’t have worked at all.

Characters Involved: Rinzler ([personal profile] notglitching) || Vorrick Longshadow "Cannae Spearfall" ([personal profile] longshadow), Peter Maximoff ([personal profile] takeitslow), J.M. Austen ([personal profile] gentlemenpreferblondes)

Details: The camera in Rinzler and Cannae's quarters turned on just past midnight on the 14th when it registered a ping from Cannae's MID-- he'd taken physical harm from an identity disk blow to his side. The fight that followed was short and one-sided; Rinzler was armed with a disk and charged baton against the broken sticks the elf was using. After killing Cannae, Rinzler stared at the body, wiped the blood from his disk, and left. Medical staff report that the damage is too extensive for a resurge; Cannae (Vorrick) is perma-killed. Under questioning, Rinzler will claim that the user started it, though there is no other evidence either way.

All remaining incidents have full visual recordings. After leaving Moro #009, Rinzler walked through the halls until he encountered Peter Maximoff. Peter taunted him, and Rinzler attacked with lethal force, pursuing Peter through the halls until arriving at a trap Peter had prepared. The trap was partially effective, and after some combat, Peter was able to bring Rinzler down. However, Peter faltered, hesitating to deliver a killing blow. Rinzler had no such qualms, and promptly rezzed up (materialized) a lightsword through Peter's gut.

J came across the fight, and put out a call for help. When she saw that Rinzler was readying to finish Peter off, she left cover, trying to shove Rinzler off Peter. Rinzler turned and struck, killing her with a disk blow. At this point, armed reinforcements arrived on the scene, and Rinzler was rapidly knocked out. Peter was hospitalized, and will survive. J is dead, and initial attempts to resurge her have failed. ((OOCly: it'll happen, but much later-- characters are welcome to assume perma-death.))

While Rinzler hasn't been through a jury trial before, this isn't a first offense. The night he arrived, he tried to murder his duplicate, Tron, seriously injuring both Tron and Bel Thorne, who tried to break the fight up when they arrived on-scene. He attacked Peter once before to no effect, and fought him a second time while on a spacewalk, breaking his ribs through the vacuum suit before they were separated by force. Of those incidents, the first and third were reported to the captains; Rinzler spent five days in the hold and was forced to work out his issues with Tron after the first, and received extra cleaning duties plus one night in the hold for injuring Peter before. Given the interest of certain parties Wanda, all three prior fights will be detailed as above during the trial.

Rinzler won't "speak" unless directly addressed, and then is terse and uncommunicative even by his standards. He's refused repair for his own damage, but it doesn't seem to be out of any guilt.

Threads:
Possible Punishments:

Category 1: Five days in the hold.

Category 2: Seven days in the hold, off-ship privileges revoked for two weeks after (including personal flights, though not transporter work with others), and eight meetings with an arbitration officer or ship counselor over the same duration. Meetings will last for a minimum of an hour and focus on applying nonviolent/nonlethal solutions.

Category 3: Solitary confinement for ten days, plus two hours daily with a probation officer or hold workforce officer after, at whatever activity they consider reparative. This will last until they evaluate Rinzler not dangerous to other members of the ship, or for a maximum of one month.

((OOC note: while I'm fine to add further repercussions if there's a consensus that way, I'd like to ask that no attempt to recode or permanently limit Rinzler get successfully voted through the jury trial. There's a CR plot followup to this where that will be an IC goal, and while characters are totally free to argue for it here, having it actually implemented at this stage would undercut a lot of planning. Relatedly, if anyone wants in on that plot, they're absolutely welcome!))

Nihlus votes for Category 2.

Peter and Alice both jeopardized the safety of other crew members by setting up invisible traps that could have killed someone else. Their reckless escalation of an already deadly situation actually did result in the loss of an uninvolved crew member's life.

Rinzler's history of violence is a serious concern, but a consensus with the rest of the crew should have been reached before taking any actions of this degree.

Nihlus votes for Category 2.

As with Peter, Alice had jeopardized the safety of other crew members by setting up invisible traps and recklessly escalating a deadly situation that resulted in the death of an uninvolved crew member.

He acknowledges that Rinzler is dangerous, but the solution is not putting other people's lives on the line.
