The Punishment System

How It Works:

The number one rule of the captains is do not harm fellow crew members. The Moira doesn't have a strict environment, but that one rule is asked to be followed. What normally would result in hold time, the captains believe is no longer enough to keep crew from harming one another. This has brought about the creation of the punishment system.

The rules are simple. If you physically injure another crew member or murder them, you are required to comment to this page using the form below. You will be asked to pick three different punishments from the stages below, each vary in how extreme they are, and to put those punishments into the comment you make using the form. From the date that you post here until three days later, players will be allowed to respond to your comment with a vote. This vote is what their character believes is a worthy punishment for the crime committed. The captains will not vote unless there is a tie.

ICly: A MID message will be sent out detailing the events; it will have an attachment of the footage (only in the case of a murder, all other events will not show footage) with it. Crew members will be asked to seek out the captains in the mess hall and relay their vote as to the offenders punishment.

Currently, a new system is in the works. Find out more here.

Ava likes Peter...and doesn't know J or Rinzler. Still, the entire proceeding distresses her and so, at the end, she simply abstains from voting in any particular manner.

You were attacked?

[He almost feels relieved, although still dismayed that the exciting spaceship adventure has turned out to have an unpleasant side after all. A very unpleasant side.

He ducks his head a little. If what Rinzler's saying is true, Flynn can't condemn him. Try to persuade him to stop short of lethal action, maybe, but not condemn.]

He commits the video recording to his memory banks as he listens to the testimony of the previous offenses in silence. When the trial is over he casts his vote - Category 2 - without a qualm or change of expression. After all, justice had no need of emotions.

[Rinzler shrugs a little, helmet dipping in assent. Yes. He'd wanted to attack it when he'd found it rifling through his belongings—why he'd been assigned to stay with multiple malware eluded Rinzler completely. But he hadn't struck first.]

Rinzler watches, but doesn't react. Whether that's because of a lack of information or a lack of interest is hard to say.

Magnus will vote Category 2. If Peter had an issue with Rinzler he should have taken his concerns to the arbitration officers or captain. His actions but the ship at risk and unnecessarily instigated a response from a volatile crew mate.

Category 2, the same as Peter. Their combined actions irresponsibly put the ship at risk and had they voiced their concerns rather than acting on their own, this could have been avoided.

Satine will not vote, she is highly critical of this way of determining what punishment a crime should be given and will not be part of it.

She will, however, state that she is willing to be Rinzler's councelor should that be the punishment he is given. She's an interpersonal relationships officer after all.

Category 3. Magnus had only heard of Rinzler's previous crimes, but the murder of two crew members cannot be overlooked.

[Flynn nods, and sighs.]

Nobody should have died. Whatever else, we're all in the same boat here. Literally. We all have to do better than this or there won't be a crew left by the time this ship's ready to send anyone home.

[He votes Category 2 for the purposes of rehabilitation, choosing to believe in self defence and accident, and does so quite openly.]

Critical can mean a lot, but Rinzler can hardly fault her for disliking the system. He's been against this ~democracy~ crazy since day one.

It's the offer that actually makes him look her way, though. He doesn't expect talking to solve anything, and there's more than a little scorn for anyone who thinks it does. But volunteering is bizarre to the point of suspicion. Does she want something from him, or is this just a bid to be in charge?

Unsurprisingly, Rinzler doesn't say anything, but the critical stare lasts a little while.

Considering her own actions with Kilgrave, Trish really doesn't feel like she's in a position to call down any sort of judgment here, and so she doesn't cast a vote.

She'd really like to talk to Alice about what happened here though, and resolves to pay her a visit in the hold.

Rinzler wouldn't expect it to be. He also doesn't expect any of these punishments to matter, but he doesn't bother saying so aloud.

There's no appreciable reaction.

[The lecture, Rinzler pointedly ignores. He can be caught watching Carsen after, though. Weird user.]

And that whole while Satine just looks back at him. There is little sympathy in that gaze, mostly there is a whole lot of steel. She might be against what she sees as a system encouraging the same sort of mob mentality that her own planet fell victim to, but that doesn't mean she isn't violently opposed to his actions.

The only thing she wants from Rinzler is the same thing she wants from everyone else. A cessation of violence.

The murderbot's gonna have a little trouble with that concept. Though she does get credit for at least not acting weak.

Well, they can work on that if she is assigned to handle his case. If not, they'll probably end up arguing about it somewhere down the line anyway.

she disagrees with part of it, but the rest is true enough — and she's already had her say: there's no point in repeating it now. if magnus gets thrown a resigned look, it's not actually that much for him.

alice watches trish as she leaves, but doesn't comment. they've shared a moment or two, but alice can't begin to guess what might be going on in her head right now. it's enough to keep her wary.

Damn, Rinzler's a live wire, and he's lighting up everyone in his path. Who's surprised? Not fucking this guy.

Church sits with his feet kicked up on a bench and his hand rustling around in a bag of roasted walnuts as he listens to the evidence presented in complete silence. For the majority of the trial, he's half listening and half watching Rinzler, equal parts impressed and unsettled at how calm he is despite everything that's happening around him. Dude doesn't sweat, gotta give him credit where credit's due.

None of the punishments seem fitting, not for someone (something?) like Rinzler. How the fuck do you appropriately discipline an AI that has violence coded into his programming? He's not a person. Solitary confinement won't do shit. Still, maybe a little separation from the general public will chill him the fuck out, at least temporarily. Church is fully prepared to vote for Category 3 as the discussions start winding down, but then someone three rows back mentions recoding, and he jerks his head to the side, twists around to search the crowd for the speaker.

The discussions spark back to life, back-and-forth arguing about the pros/cons of recoding Rinzler, why it might help, why it wouldn't help. Two minutes in, Church abruptly stands and leaves the roasted almonds on the bench as he dusts the salt from his hands.

He casts a spiteful, completely childish vote for Category 1 and walks out.

Prometheus doesn't show up until the trial is already underway. He slips in and stays in the periphery of the room, out of way and out of mind. There's no spite, sympathy or... anything, really. To Rinzler, his expression would be more reminiscent of Pandora's than what could be expected from him.

He makes notes of who shows up: two people with the same face as Rinzler's, his room mates, that girl... And plenty more. Well, Rinzler had attacked several people and killed at least two, this sort of turn out was expected. The Reploid leaves quietly as discussions about how to handle Rinzler gets underway and doesn't cast a vote.

Away from the mess hall and out of ear shot, he starts laughing like this is the funniest thing he's ever seen.

Church's presence is noted with about as much apathy as the rest. His reactions, Rinzler almost misses entirely. The mention of reprogramming draws more than one person's attention, and Rinzler's far too busy trying not to flinch to pay attention to where one not-user might be looking.

When Church stands, though, the motion at least draws a twitch of Rinzler's mask. He watches without comment as the AI votes and leaves, and if the choice doesn't make much sense, it's at least welcome as a distraction.

Without any elaboration, Han is going to vote category 2, though frankly he's not happy about any part of this whole mess.

A slightly hesitant vote here for category two. He's got a lot of questions, but on principle based on their conversation, he feels like he has to vote for more than just minimal hold time.

No one comes out of this looking good. With misgivings, Han is going to vote for category two, in the hopes that the arbitration officer might make some difference. He's not holding his breath, though.

The rest of his reasoning he's keeping to himself-- even if Rinzler's not technically a droid he's more like a droid than like anything else, and punishing him with time in solitary doesn't seem like it'd be effective. On top of that there's definitely at least some element of self-defense here... And he's been working with Rinzler for a while now with no hint of this violent side, so it seems like there's more at play than he understands.
