The Punishment System

How It Works:

The number one rule of the captains is do not harm fellow crew members. The Moira doesn't have a strict environment, but that one rule is asked to be followed. What normally would result in hold time, the captains believe is no longer enough to keep crew from harming one another. This has brought about the creation of the punishment system.

The rules are simple. If you physically injure another crew member or murder them, you are required to comment to this page using the form below. You will be asked to pick three different punishments from the stages below, each vary in how extreme they are, and to put those punishments into the comment you make using the form. From the date that you post here until three days later, players will be allowed to respond to your comment with a vote. This vote is what their character believes is a worthy punishment for the crime committed. The captains will not vote unless there is a tie.

ICly: A MID message will be sent out detailing the events; it will have an attachment of the footage (only in the case of a murder, all other events will not show footage) with it. Crew members will be asked to seek out the captains in the mess hall and relay their vote as to the offenders punishment.

Currently, a new system is in the works. Find out more here.

Toriel just seems immensely disappointed, Alice ends up getting the same judgement she gave Peter, Category 2.

Toriel reminds the young woman that- control issues or not, both of them planned to aggravate and kill someone they knew was dangerous. She'll acknowledge she doesn't know what occurred between all of them previously, but that is no excuse for actively goading on someone they know had little self control. Reminding Alice she and Peter actively endangered themselves and people uninvolved with their plan.

With all this information, Toriel votes a mixture of Category 2 and Category 3. She states Rinzler needs to speak with a counselor as much as he needs to serve his time.

Napoleon will privately ask if they can just leave him locked up permanently and vote privately for category 3 where Rinzler can't see him because he still needs to sleep in their room 8|

Rinzler doesn't think there's anything to communicate-- though there's a faint glint of bitter irony at "speak". Still, he won't say as much to Toriel. She might not be a user, but she's still a creator in her own way, and he knows better than to argue with that.

When Napoleon moves away from the proceedings to make his private vote, Rinzler's stare will track him, and on return, he'll get One (1) Sarcastic Headtilt.

It's not hard to guess this user wants him gone. So does half the ship (at least). Rinzler's not glitched enough to set a target just from that, but Napoleon skulking around to cast a vote because he's too much of a coward to own up to it only increases Rinzler's scorn.

Nooo, don't give him any attention for it, Rinzler. He'll just laugh like a dog.

Tobias doesn't have to know someone to have fun mocking a shitty justice system.

Fiora looks worried and mildly confused as the trial progresses, but by the end, she's clearly disturbed and disgusted. Category 3 is voted for without hesitation, and she'd have gladly voted for something more severe if it were available.

[personal profile] meyneth 2016-04-14 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What's with these options? Rinzler and Peter got someone killed, and the punishment is a few days of time out??

Fiora votes for Category 2 if only because it seems to be the most severe.

[personal profile] meyneth 2016-04-14 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This trial affects Fiora just a bit more, thanks to Alice making some kind of attempt at explaining her actions. Fiora had no idea Rinzler was so dangerous. Nevertheless, what Alice and Peter did was reckless, selfish, and obviously put others in harm's way, as seen by J's death. Fiora votes for Category 2.

Rinzler doesn't seem fazed by the reaction. If she expresses her disgust verbally, he'll stare at her head-on. How very hypocritical, user.

The least Sans can do is show up. Staying in his room isn't exactly an option when it's full to the brim with J's makeup, clothes, unmade bed, and a lingering scent of old perfume. It's enough to choke a guy, and that's absolutely the only reason why Sans can't seem to stand being in there for more than five minutes at a time.

If Peter looks his way, Sans will meet his gaze. He won't find disappointment, either. If anything, Sans appears... guilty? Well, he would if his face showed much in the way of emotion. It's hard not to imagine them both months ago, when Sans was on the other side of the hold bars, engaging in a weak-tea philisophical debate with Peter about when murder was justified. He failed, and now Peter was paying for it.

His vote tells far more of the story more than his expression ever could. Namely, his lack of vote.

Sans abstains.

[personal profile] skelepun 2016-04-14 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And now Alice. He likes Alice too. It's hard not to remember when their positions were reversed. The person he knows least in these proceedings is Rinzler himself. If staying in his room was at all an option, Sans wouldn't even consider attending. Too much effort, making all this mess real.

And yes, he's aware of that hypocrisy.

Sans abstains.

Sans spends the trial grinning even wider than usual, jaw cupped in his hands while he stares. Oh, man. Good ol' Rinzy. At it again, the scamp.

If anyone looks a little more closely, they might get the faintest impression that Sans is shaking...? Sweating? Needless to say, that happy grin seems little more than a passive-aggressive veneer of raw hate.

Sans abstains.

Miles isn't able to attend the trial in person, which is just as well; he's about as angry and upset as he gets, and because he's still in recovery, he submits his vote by MID: Category 3. He'd opt for something much more severe, were the option available.

Bel votes Category 2, with a strong recommendation to add Category 3's "two hours daily with a probation officer until evaluated non-dangerous" which should be served during Rinzler's normal duties and/or off-time (as decided by said officer) and a warning that further violent incidents will be dealt with more severely in relation to previous ones. Bel's argument would include points like:

  • Solitary confinement is cruel and unusual by most non-program standards, and the ship should not impose it unless it serves a purpose other than punitive;
  • if not cruel and unusual by program standards, which Bel (a very dry observation) is not fully educated on, it should nonetheless be replaced by a punishment with rehabilitative utility, and in Rinzler's case that should involve less isolation from other personalities and perspectives (a regular stretch in the hold allows visitors but prevents physical altercations, an ideal compromise);
  • if the Moira is going to have program crew-members, it becomes urgent to better understand program values and psychology (and Rinzler's individual psychology), and daily observation by a probation officer during the course of Rinzler's normal life would achieve that goal as well as the primary goal of deterring more murders;
  • Bel doubts that two weeks is enough time to solve an entire murdercat but feels guidance counseling would be more effective if backed with supervised probation.

With a direct look at Rinzler, Bel adds that if this were a normal ship, their recommendation would be to strip him of rank, void his contract, and confine him until an opportunity arose to deliver him to a planetary government for trial. Peter led him into the trap altercation and shares some of the blame for the fight that followed, but the rest of the pattern is that of someone willing to kill for any reason or no reason. There's no explanation for the first guy, and then Rinzler tried to finish Peter off twice after bringing him down (when he'd ceased to be any threat at all) instead of calling medbay -- and turning around and stabbing J, who was unarmed and not even focusing on him after the initial shove, is just pure murder. Worse, knowing that dead crewpeople might well come back, the killings don't even serve whatever purpose they did for Rinzler back in his home system. They're pointless, not the deeds of a soldier but the random thrashings of someone out of control. As long as Rinzler chooses to escalate to death when he has the skill and power to end threats to himself without killing, as long as he sees attempts to stop his fights (this with another flat look at him, remembering their first meeting; bygones can only be bygones if it stops happening again) as invitations to kill more people, he can't be a functional part of this crew.

How could you do this to your poor old dad, Rinzler, he had such high hopes for you.

Alice doesn't really have any experience in disappointing her mom. She's pretty sure that someone who did, though, would be feeling real extra shitty right now.

She doesn't reply, but her body language acknowledges Toriel's points. She's only familiar with her in passing, and hoo boy are those school dropoffs going to be a little more awkward now.

Tex feels it's unfair and unnecessary to submit Rinzler's previous infractions as evidence and tries to vote not guilty for reasons of self-defense. It's clear from what she's learned about Rinzler that he's disliked and she feels this has something to do with the fact that he's an artificial intelligence. When this proves futile she votes category 1 to levy the lightest sentence possible for this incident.

Eggsy knows that a person needs to do what they need to do, but the ship is small and people murdering each other will cause problems.

Lmao. If he gets the chance to talk to her, he'd ask for her reasoning.

What the hell were you thinking, Peter.

Bel votes Category 2 with strong recommendations for an additional course of counseling and probationary service spent learning ship's safety procedures and hazard prevention in excruciating detail, with special attention to the fact that we are on a spaceship, a small, closed environment, and a hazard for one crewperson is a hazard for everybody. You do not set traps in ship's corridors. And you do not unilaterally decide to seriously injure or kill another crewperson, especially in an uncontrolled way that could and did lead to the death of an innocent bystander, if the danger to yourself (Rinzler? Seriously???) hadn't been enough of a deterrent.

Due to Peter's condition at time of trial, Bel's remarks will be brief and low-key, but they'll visit him in medbay and :/ at him a lot beforehand. You're better than this, kid. Next time try to think as fast as you run.

No vote. Tali will show up, but she'll explain that she doesn't think probation or counselling are going to work, not from an organic counsellor and probation officer used to dealing with organics, and honestly, she doesn't know him or his programming well enough to know what will work. There are people on board who know him and his programming, maybe they should have helped work out a punishment.

Hell, maybe Rinzler should help work out his own punishment at this rate.

Basically, this is a protest vote. Regular punishments aren't going to work on everybody, and if the crew keeps enforcing them in a blanket fashion like this, they're eventually going to stop working on anybody.

[personal profile] hellsbel 2016-04-14 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
As with Peter, Bel votes for Category 2 with strong recommendations for an additional course of counseling and probationary service focused on ship's safety. And also conflict resolution. The crew is indeed full of scary people -- and by choosing to set a potentially lethal trap for another crew member in the ship's corridors, making a unilateral decision to seriously injure or kill someone (and in cold blood rather than the heat of an immediate conflict) because she didn't like how the captains had chosen to deal with him, she's made herself one of them.

It matters that she's submitted herself for trial. She's not a cold-blooded killer and Bel, though not saying so aloud, would rather have her for a crewperson than Rinzler. But she planned a murder, and it resulted in serious injury for her co-conspirator and the death of an innocent person. They need to know she'll choose safer ways to deal with other crew problems in the future.
